It is inserted into the jawbone to replace a missing tooth root. After a short healing period a replacement tooth can be secured to the top of the implant. The new tooth can look, feel and perform like a natural tooth.
It is also possible to use multiple implants to support a denture or bridge.
Implant secured teeth are more comfortable than dentures because there is no slipping or movement. This eliminates some of the key worries of dentures and improves self confidence.
Implants are a good alternative to bridgework for replacing missing teeth, as they eliminate the need to grind down healthy teeth.
